Abstract

1447985 Radar GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 5 April 1974 [16 Jan 1973] 2313/73 Heading H4D To avoid the collision of a vehicle, automatically guided along a predetermined route (e.g. a train) with obstacles on the route, a pulsed radar is mounted on the vehicle, and, as a preliminary step, the vehicle is run along the route at a time when it is known that there are no obstacles present, the radar returns then being recorded at measured intervals along the route in digital storage means to give a set of reference "obstacles free" returns. During an actual run, the radar return at each interval is compared with the corresponding reference return, and any significant difference inferred as being produced by an obstacle. Where the route curves, the radar beam is programmed to azimuth scan along the route, either by physical movement of an aerial or by relative phase adjustment of a pair of receiving aerials. The invention may also be applied to an aircraft being guided down a flight path, or a vehicle guided along a visible line by photo-detector means.
