1447735 Vibratory finishing machines ROTO-FINISH CO 29 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 18645/74 Heading B3D A vibratory abrading machine for finishing the surface of a part comprises a gyratorymotion-producing assembly including a housing 46 within which is vertically located a shaft 54 in bearings 51, 52 at least one weight being secured eccentrically with respect to the shaft and a motor 62 mounted on the housing and coupled to the shaft at a position axially spaced from the bearings to transmit the drive to the shaft. Springs 16, 17 resiliently support the assembly and a finishing chamber 39 attached thereto, on a base structure 12. The finishing 39 chamber is of trough like configuration located in a substantially horizontally oriented configuration. In operation the parts to be finished are located with an abrading material in the chamber and the motor started, the gyratory vibration produced by the out-of-balance weight(s) feeds the parts and material around the trough which in the embodiment is in the form of an annular unit formed as one turn of a helix, the vibration causing the ports to ascend as they move around the annulus. In all embodiments the motor is mounted on the housing for gyratory motion therewith in Fig. 1 the motor is mounted coaxial with the vertical shaft and above the finishing trough with a dog clutch connection to the shaft. In Fig. 3 however the motor 75 is mounted on the side of the housing and is connected to the shaft, at a position spaced axially beyond the bearings, by a belt and pulley drive. It is stated that other forms of known connections may be used. A ramp like gate is used to discharge the parts from the trough as they ascend to the upper regions during the vibratory action the parts arriving on a sieve whereby the material is returned to the trough.
