Abstract

1447676 Vacuum switches ALLIS-CHALMERS CORP 29 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 55341/73 Heading H1N A sealed vacuum circuit interrupter having a heat sink and heat conducting dispersal shields comprises a conventional arrangement of contact carrying rods 29, 37 and bellows 40 with respect to metal end caps 26, 27 but the tubular envelope includes a relatively massive metal heat sink 12 located between two insulaters 14, 16 and a pair of opposed bell-shaped thin metal shields 55, 70 are insulatingly supported from the contact rods and from ground and are disposed in surrounding relationship to the rods 29, 37 so that the bell mouths are spaced apart approximately equivalent to the contacts open gap and so that their peripheries 56, 72 are adjacent the heat sink 12. Metallic collar shields 58, 71 attached to the end caps overlap the bell ends 57, 73 to protect the insulators 14, 16 and further shields 45, 65 and baffles 50, 68 protect the respective contact-carrying rods and bellows from arc products and serve as condensing surfaces. All the internal shields act as heat conductors either to the principal heat sink 12 or to the end caps 26, 27 serving as auxiliary heat sinks. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the baffles for the contact rods are dispensed with and a fixed shield (87) and a bellows shield (81) are directly and conductively attached to the corresponding current carrying rods to improve the heat transfer.
