Abstract

1447473 Bicyclic compounds F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 7 May 1975 [8 May 1974] 19175/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein the bonds indicated by broken lines are either simultaneously present or simultaneously absent and R represents a C 1 -C 7 alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxymethyl or C 1 -C 7 alkanoyloxymethyl group and, when the ring system is unsaturated, R can also represent a carboxy group. The compounds may be prepared by cyclizing a compound of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> represents a C 1 -C 7 alkyl group by heating in an inert solvent to give a compound of the formula and, if desired, submitting said bicyclic compound of Formula Iα to (a) catalytic hydrogenation of the double bonds, if desired transesterification of the carbalkoxy group in the hydrogenation product of reduction of said group to the hydroxymethyl group and, if desired lower alkanoylation of the latter; or (b) reduction of the carbalkoxy group to the hydroxymethyl group and, if desired, hydrogenation and/or lower alkanoylation of the thus obtained compound as under (a); or (c) isomerization of the α-carbalkoxy group to the #-carbalkoxy group and, if desired, further reaction of the thus obtained compound as under (a) or (b); or (d) saponification or transesterification of the carbalkoxy group.
