Elastic resistance or storage devices.- In systems for driving machinery subject to fluctuating loads, such as winding- drums D, a prime mover such as an electric motor M or a Diesel engine, has coupled to it a pump A which is adapted to charge an hydraulic accumulator F when the load on the prime mover is less than a predetermined amount, and which acts as a motor when the load exceeds this predetermined amount. The prime mover may drive the drums D through a variablespeed gear A<1>, B<1> preferably of the Williams-Janney type, controlled by the means described in Specification 144,742, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.]. The pump A mav be controlled manually by a governor driven by an electric motor supplied from a shuntwound generator coupled to the prime mover or by an hydraulic ram actuated by the pressure in the gear A', B'. When an electric motor is used as the prime mover, the pump A may be controlled by a solenoid or by a torque motor J supplied with current from the secondary of a transformer T, the primary windings of which are in series with the leads L supplying the motor M.
