Abstract
1447418 Automatic frequency control MULLARD Ltd 29 March 1974 13997/74 Heading H3A In a frequency synthesizer of the phase locked loop type, the phase of a variable frequency oscillator output is compared with that of a reference clock generator after frequency reduction by an adjustable accumulator whose residue is converted in a D/A converter to produce a signal which is balanced against the phase comparator output to compensate for irregularities in the pulse repetition rate of one of the phase comparator inputs. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the divided down output of the VFO and the clock pulse generator CPG are compared in phase comparator PC to produce an output which is applied to one input of a summer ASD whose output is the control signal for the VFO. The output from the clock pulse generator is also fed via a programmable multiplier RM and a counter type divider D1 to a circuit PS which inhibits a pulse from the VFO each time a pulse is produced at the output of divider D1, so that the output frequency FD from the programmable divider PRD is equal to that from divider D2. The remainder signal in divider D1 is fed to the digital/analogue converter which provides a second input to the summer ASD. The multiplier RM and divider D1 may be replaced by a single device which may receive its input from the output of divider PRD, Fig. 2 (not shown), or which may be connected in place of divider D2, Fig. 1 (not shown). In this last mentioned arrangement the circuit PS is omitted.
