Abstract

1447389 Valves OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 26 Nov 1973 54712/73 Heading F2V [Also in Division F1] A valve for controlling the flow of fuel from a tank 18 to an I.C. engine 24 comprises a housing of three body parts 30, 32, 34 accommodating a first diaphragm 46 which is co-operable with a seat 44 to control flow between an inlet 16 and an outlet 20 and which is subject to the force of a spring 62 and the pressure in chamber 64 on one side and the pressure of fuel upstream of the seat 44 on the other side and a second diaphragm 72 which is actuable as a pump to increase the pressure of the fuel upstream of seat 44. When chamber 64 is connected to atmosphere the valve can be opened without the aid of the second diaphragm. If the chamber 64 is connected to the pressurized fuel tank 18, the valve cannot be opened without actuation of the second diaphragm. Upstream pressure is increased by movement of the second diaphragm against a spring 82 and by closure of a check valve 58. The second diaphragm may be actuated mechanically or by pressurized fluid.
