Abstract
1447369 Mixing fluids JOHNSON & JOHNSON 13 May 1974 [13 Feb 1973] 7102/73 Heading B1C Apparatus for dispensing a fluid (gas or liquid) in a liquid especially for foaming a solvent-based adhesive, or forming oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions, comprises at least one blade having an aerofoil cross-section (as defined) truncated downstream of its thickest part to provide a rearward facing surface having at least one orifice smaller than a conduit within the blade through which fluid is supplied. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a stationary blade 5 is fixed across a conduit carrying a liquid flow fluid being supplied by conduit 12 to narrower passages or orifices 14. There may be several such blades in staggered array. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, for batch or continuous operation, there may be a plurality of blades 5 arranged as a rotor detachably mounted on a hollow shaft 9 through which the fluid is supplied, and operating within a container preferably cylindrical in the region of the rotor and closely conforming to it in diameter. In any embodiment there may be arrangements to cause fluid to issue from the orifices at different rates from blade to blade, the blade may vary in camber or pitch along the blade; there may be vanes or baffles to guide flow or prevent turbulence. The orifices may be shaped; the fluid supply may be at, above or below, atmospheric pressure. The size of the bubbles or droplets may be altered by varying the rate of rotation of a rotor, the size of the orifices and the viscosity of the liquid.
