Abstract

1447259 Piling; jetting earth L L FREDERICK 11 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 42582/73 Headings E1F and E1H A pile (sheet pile as shown) comprises a main body portion 10 having conduit means 12, 13, Fig. 1, or 64, Fig. 5, for carrying a stream of lubricant, e.g. water, to a drive shoe 46, Fig. 4, which is mounted on the lower end of the body portion 10 and which has a plurality of jets for expulsion of the water therefrom to facilitate driving of the pile. As shown in Fig. I the water carrying means comprises a pair of plates 12, 13 tack-welded to the angles of a Z-sectioned sheet pile a plurality of apertures 11 being formed along each angle. The upper ends of the plates 12, are connected to a manifold 16 and when water is pumped into the manifold under pressure, some will issue through the spaces between the tack welds across the faces of the pile. The shoe 46 is attached to the body portion 10 by rivets 50 passing through slots 48 so that relative movement between shoe 46 and body portion 10 occurs when the latter is vibrated. Water enters the shoe 46 via an adaptor 66 secured to conduit 64, Fig. 5, and reaches the shoe jets via passages 52, 54 and 58. Some water also issues upwardly between the shoe 46 and body portion 10. The intermittent sealing of the adaptor 66 against the bottom of the corresponding socket in the shoe produces a water hammer force to supplement the vibrator. In another embodiment, the pile is in the form of a double-walled cylinder, the annular space between the walls forming the conduit for the water.
