Abstract
1446292 Solvent extraction of oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 5 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 47767/74 Heading C5E Petroleum distillate is extracted with a selective solvent for aromatic and polar compounds to produce a primary raffinate and a primary extract phase, the primary extract phase is cooled, e.g. to 45-100‹ C., to produce a secondary raffinate and a secondary extract phase and solvent is removed from the secondary extract phase, e.g. by distillation or steam distillation, which is then treated with a selective solvent, e.g. propane, for paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons to produce a deresinified secondary extract and a resinous product with a high content, i.e. at least 70% by weight, of aromatic and polar hydrocarbons. The primary extract phase can be obtained by extracting a lube oil base stock such as a vacuum distillate or residue with furfural or phenol. The colour of the resinous product can be improved by hydrogenation of the resinous product or of the secondary extract prior to the extraction with propane. The resinous product can be used for extending and plasticizing epoxy resin, polyurethanes or vinyl polymers.
