Abstract

1446284 Modified snake venom neurotoxin M J SANDERS 1 Feb 1974 [1 Feb 1973] 4796/74 Heading A5B Compositions for use in treating animals suffering from a degenerative neurological disease, comprise, in an administrable form, a detoxified and neurotropically active modified snake venom neurotoxin composition, at least a part of the modified venom neurotoxin being derived from a species of the Bungarus genus, the composition being atoxic and exhibiting at least a 30% inhibition of plaques in the Semliki Forest virus test. Part of the modified venom neurotoxin may be derived from a species of the Naja genus and/or from the species Crotalus terrificus terrificus. The composition may be prepared by oxygenating, at a pH of above 7 and a temperature of 15‹ to 40‹C, the respective snake venom neurotoxin(s), until atoxic, and dialyzing the resulting product. The compositions may be administered orally or parenterally in the form of tablets, powders, elixirs, solutions and physiological saline solutions.
