Abstract

1446073 Coating with pre-formed sheets ELI LILLY & CO 21 Aug 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 39605/73 Heading B6G A mirror-like reflective surface is applied to a plastics box by placing a foil strip having a light reflective foil on a backing over a predetermined area of the plastics box, applying a die under simultaneous pressure and heat on the backing, the application of said pressure commencing on a limited area of said foil strip and progressing on said foil strip only toward the perimeter of the predetermined area to force air to escape beyond said area's perimeter as the die completes its compressive action over the predetermined area, thereby effecting a stamped-outer portion of the foil on the foil strip to become affixed in a smooth relationship with the box. As shown in Fig. 4 a die 16 having heating means 17 is used to stamp a foil strip having a suitable foil 19 on a polyethylene terephthalate backing 20 on to the lid 14 of a box. Die 16 has a stamping surface 21 which is of a convex configuration as shown in Fig. 3. The centre of the die is therefore the first point to make contact with the foil strip and then upon further downward movement of the die this pressure progressively advances toward the perimeter of the predetermined area into which the foil is to be affixed so that all air that would otherwise be trapped between the foil and the box is forced to the outside. The elimination of air results in a flat reflective area of foil which has no discoloration, wrinkles or other imperfections that would reduce the reflective properties of the foil.
