1446006 Moulding press BETTCHER INDUSTRIES Inc 14 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 38471/73 Heading B5A Combustible products such as meat are compressed in a cavity E, Fig. 4, formed between a stationary die 14 and a vertically movable die 30, by a ram F of a cross-section corresponding to that of the cavity and driven by a piston and cylinder 140, 142. The end of the cavity opposlte the ram is closed during compression by a plate 158 movable with the die 30. The die 14 is clamped to a stationary plate 10 supporting a toggle mechanism and drive means 54 therefor, to vertically reciprocate the die 30, which is clamped to a platen 34 from which extend rods 40-46 passing through the plate 10 and connected to bearing supports 48, 49. The toggle mechanism D comprises two sets of links 70, 72 and 88, 100 interconnected by links 110, 112, one set pivotally connected between the support 48 and brackets 76 on the plate 10, and the other between the support 49 and a fixed support 60 on the plate. The toggle mechanism is driven by a double acting piston and cylinder motor 127 pivotally mounted at (128), Fig. 5, not shown, on the support 60, with the end of its piston-rod pivoted by a bearing (122) to the centre of the links 110, 112. The motor axis is inclined to the direction of movement of the die 30, such inclination becoming progressively less as the die is lowered. After compression by the ram the upper die is raised and the ram again operated to push the product on to a plate. Instead of a single die cavity, the opposed dies may provide a number of laterally spaced cavities (180a, 180b, 180c) Fig. 2, not shown, each cooperating with an upper movable die portion. A ram is provided for each cavity and the rams are driven by separate motors.
