Abstract

1445736 Moulding granular material VON ROLL AG 20 July 1973 [20 July 1972 18 Aug 1972] 34799/73 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions G3 and F2] Apparatus for manufacturing blocks by compacting granular material comprises a mould 2 with a movable end wall 4 which is moved by a first drive comprising means for converting from rotary motion to linear motion of a sleeve 62 (worm 67 and wheel nut 64 on the screwed sleeve 62) and a second drive (hydraulic) which produces linear motion of a rod 60 relative to the sleeve, and means are provided for controlling the driving means in response to a measurement of a parameter involved in the motion of the wall 4 (displacement and/or hydraulic pressure). The motion has a steady component and a vibratory one. As shown, the arrangement is duplicated at each end of the mould. Each worm 67 is driven by an hydraulic motor 70 in response to the difference between a pressure transducer 25 (i.e. for compressive force) with an electrical output and a ramp signal generated at 21. The second, hydraulic, drive 12 is controlled by the difference between a displacement transducer 14 and a waveform generated (in respect of magnitude, frequency and shape) at 22 ... 24. 19 and 45 are electrical and hydraulic power supplies respectively. In Fig. 1 (not shown), which is not an embodiment of the invention, there is an additional displacement transducer for movement of the hydraulic valve 12, which in this case drives the sleeve directly. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a machine complete with weight controlled filling hoppers; moulds are filled and then transferred to the compression station, which is surrounded by a suction box (130) to remove gases evolved during compression. Details of back lash elimination in the worm and wheel drive are given (Fig. 3, not shown), see Division F2.
