1445735 Rotary joints HEAD WRIGHTSON & CO Ltd 18 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 34668/73 Heading F2G A rotary joint for transferring hydraulic fluid to an hydraulic motor comprises a stationary member including a housing 2 closed at one end by end-plate 4 and a rotary member including portion 8 having spigot 6 extending in a bore formed in housing 2 by bush 10, the adjacent surface portions 14, 16 of bush 10 and spigot 6 respectively being maintained in closely spaced, non-contacting relationship by tapered roller bearings 12. The rotary member has a passageway 24 formed between sleeve 20 inserted into bore 22 in spigot 6 and a second passageway 26 formed by the bore of sleeve 20 both passageways communicating with annular grooves in the external surface of spigot 6 through drillings 28, 30 respectively. The other ends of passageways 24, 26 communicate with external connections 32, 34 respectively in flange 35. Housing 2 has two connections 36 communicating with annular grooves in the internal surface of bush 10 through drillings 42, 44 respectively in bush 10. Fluid leaking from the space between surface 14, 16 reaches bearings 12, 12, excess fluid being conducted thence by galleries 46 in housing 2 to connection 48 in end-plate 4. Lip seal 50 prevents fluid from escaping from the joint except via connection 48. In use the rotary member of the joint is connected by flange 35 to a rotary cylinder of an hydraulic motor (not shown) on a machine part and fluid passes from connection 36 (illustrated) on housing 2, through drillings 42, 28 along passageway 24 and a radial passage in flange 35 and through connection 32 to one end of the rotary cylinder. Fluid is also transferred from the connection 36 (not shown) through drillings 44, 30 along passageway 26, through connection 34 in flange 35 to the other end of the rotary cylinder.
