Abstract

1445692 Coalescing filter KNITMESH Ltd and G A DAVIES 16 Jan 1974 [19 Jan 1973] 2924/73 Heading B1D A coalescing filter apparatus for separating oil and water has a bed 1 of polypropylene and/or stainless steel knitted fabric rolled into cylinders or rings (Figs. 5-9 not shown) supported on a perforate base 2 through which an oil/water dispersion is passed from inlets 3. The disperse phase coalesces and the mixture separates into two layers as shewn in tank A which may then be withdrawn through outlets 6 and 7. The coalescing filter is cleaned of obstructive solids which have passed upstream filter 4 by passing a wash liquid which may be oil, water or the oil/water dispersion through inlet 10, the wash liquid flowing at a rate to fluidise the bed, or the grid being mechanically shaken. The used wash liquid is then passed to settling tank 13, dirt is settled and supernatant wash liquid may be recycled to the filter apparatus. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the oil/water layers separate below the bed, the feed being from above. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the oil separates above and the water below the bed, the feed being directed into the bed. Two beds may be cleaned together or sequentially as in Fig. 2.
