Abstract
1445549 Preparing gas containing H 2 and CO SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 17 Feb 1975 [18 Feb 1974] 6590/75 Heading C5E A process for preparing gas containing H 2 and CO comprises incompletely burning a liquid hydrocarbon fuel with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in a first reaction zone, separating at least part of the soot from the product gas by cyclonic action, and converting the separated soot into H 2 and CO in a second reaction zone. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 2, fuel oil 2, oxygen-containing gas 3, and steam 4 are fed into a first reaction zone 1, the products then passing into a heat exchanger 5 before entering a cyclone 21 at 24 via an injector 44. Soot 30 separated by the cyclone passes to a gathering line 32, and gas 27 still containing soot is fed to an injector 39 receiving water from a washtower 33, then to a separator 40. Partly washed gas 41 then enters the washtower 33 for complete removal of soot. Washtower products are the product gas 42 and sooty water 34 some of which 35 is recycled and replenished at 36, and the rest 38 is fed to the injector 39. The wet soot effluent 43 from the separator is fed to the injector 44 which receives the sooty gas from the heat exchanger 5, the water thereby being evaporated from the wet soot. Further cyclones 20, 22 form part of further first reactor/washer combinations (not shown) and also feed soot into the gathering line 32 which in turn feeds a second reaction zone 12 which is also fed with oxygen-containing gas 13, and, if used, steam 14 and more fuel oil 15. The product gas 19 emerges via a heat exchanger 16.
