Abstract
1445139 Hydrogen fluoride production; silica R S REED 10 Sept 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 42523/73 Heading C1A A process for the production of hydrogen fluoride comprises (a) forming a mixture of silicon tetrafluoride, water vapour and air; (b) flame hydrolysing the silicon tetrafluoride at a temperature of at least 1500‹ F. to produce silicon dioxide particles, the silicon dioxide having an averse primary particle size in excess of 0À1 microns, and hydrogen fluoride; (c) promoting agglomeration of the silicon dioxide particles by direct cooling of the reaction products and separating the silicon dioxide, the temperature of the reaction product gas stream being maintained at at least 900‹ F. during the cooling to agglomerate the silicon dioxide and the separation thereof; and (d) recovering the hydrogen fluoride. The reaction products of the flame hydrolysis are preferably cooled to between 500‹ and 800‹ F. below the flame temperature, e.g. to 1000-1500‹ F. The flame hydrolysis temperature is preferably in the range from 2000-3000‹ F. The ratio of the available water to the stoichiometric requirement of water for the flame hydrolysis reaction is preferably in the ratio from 2 : 1 to 15 : 1.
