Abstract

1444587 Treating exhaust gases NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 17 July 1973 [19 July 1972 (2)] 34036/73 Heading B1W [Also in: Division F1 and F4] A combination of an electronically controlled exhaust gas purifying system and an I.C. engine 1 comprises a thermal reaction 16 upstream of a catalytic converter 10 in the engine exhaust system; an air supply system 12 to supply air to the exhaust system upstream of the thermal reactor 16 and electronic control means to prevent the supply of air when the temperature of either the thermal reactor or the catalytic converter is above a respective predetermined value or when the the engine is being cranked. During cranking the output of a generator 22 driven by the engine is sufficient to energise a relay 23 and a solenoid 35 is energised by battery 29 so that a valve 33 prevents air flow to the exhaust system. When the engine runs at normal speed, the relay 23 connects electronic computing circuit 36 to the battery, the computing circuit giving an output signal S1 to close valve 33 only when one or both of the converter 10 and reactor 16 exceed their respective predetermined temperatures and otherwise allowing air to reach the exhaust system. A signal S2 is emitted by circuit 36 when the reactor 16 falls below the reaction commencement temperature (lower than the previously mentioned predetermined value) to energise relay 51 and thereby connect a second contact break of mechanism 39 having contacts which open after those of contact breaker 38 thereby retarding ignition. This causes the exhaust gases emitted by the engine to be hotter, so raising the temperature of the reactor 16 again. The signal S2 goes by way of an engine temperature responive switch 56 which is closed when the engine temperature is low. The signal S2 is not produced if the rate of temperature rise of the reactor 16 is greater than a preset value, unless the reactor temperature is 'below a predetermined value lower than the reaction commencement temperature.
