Abstract
1444467 Welding by pressure CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 3 Feb 1975 [19 April 1974] 17202/74 Heading B3R A friction welding machine comprises, mounted for movement relative to a fixed base, a rotary drive assembly for a first workpiece wherein the assembly has a rotary drive member, for the workpiece, which is supported by at least two thrust bearings and a ram means is provided for each thrust bearing, the two or more ram means acting in parallel between the fixed base and the respective thrust bearings. In an embodiment the base supports a clamp and a backstop for a second workpiece and supports a carriage carrying an electric motor con. nected by drive belts to a pulley 14 on a spindle 10 connected at its right hand end to a chuck for the first workpiece. The spindle is supported near its right hand end by a thrust bearing 16 against a flange 28 on the spindle and by another bearing 18 near its left hand end, the bearings being mounted in a tubular support 20. A collar 12 is carried by the spindles at its left hand end and this collar is supported in a support 16 by a second thrust bearing 22 and another bearing 24. A first hydraulic ram 40 and a second hydraulic ram 42 engage abutment 54, 56 on the member 20 and a hydraulic ram 46 engages the support member 26, so that the rams supply pressure to the workpiece through the thrust bearings. Three or more thrust bearings may be employed, the rams may be concentrically arranged or may share the total load unequally. The rams may be hydraulic/pneumatic or pneumatic.
