Abstract

1444440 Self-extinguishing styrene polymer compositions BASF AG 21 Dec 1973 [3 Jan 1973] 59406/73 Heading C3P Self - extinguishing moulding compositions comprise (A) 100 parts by weight of a styrene polymer or copolymer, (B) 0À05 to 20 parts by weight of an organic bromine compound containing at least 40 weight per cent of bromine, (C) 0À05 to 2 parts by weight of an oligomeric or polymeric unsubstituted or halo-substituted di-, tri- or tetra-alkylbenzene having a degree of polymerization of 2 to 200, and as stabilizing material (D) 0À03 to 3 parts by weight of an organic phosphite and at least one other stabilizer selected from (E) 0À03 to 3 parts by weight of a C 4-12 alkane polyol containing 4 to 12 hydroxyl groups, (F) 0À01 to 1 part by weight of antimony trioxide, (G) 0À01 to 1 part by weight of a hindered phenol and (H) 0À01 to 1 part by weight of a substituted benzotriazole. The styrene polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer with α-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate or an acrylate, or a rubber modified polystyrene. The bromine compound may be hexabromocyclododecane, octabromohexadecane, brominated rubber or brominated diphenyl. Specified polyols are meso-erythritol, arabitol, quercitol, glucitol, mannitol galactitol and pentaerythritol. Examples describe compositions comprising impact resistant polystyrene containing 4% of polybutadiene mineral oil hexabromocyclododecane, p-diisopropylbenzene hexamer, trinonylphenyl phosphite and pentaerythritol, optionally together with (a) antimony trioxide, 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol and 2 - (21 - hydroxy - 51 - methylphenyl) benzotriazole or (b) 2-(21-hydroxy-5<SP>1</SP>-methylphenyl)- benzotriazole.
