Abstract

1444169 Plastic-elastic compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 11 Dec 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 57353/73 Heading C3P Plastic-elastic compositions are prepared by a multi-stage polymerization process which comprises polymerizing butene-1 and/or propene, with or without one or more other olefins, at 50‹ to 120‹ C. in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a titanium chloride and an aluminium trialkyl or dialkyl hydride to a monomer conversion of 30 to 70 mol. per cent, converting the aluminium compound to alkyl aluminium sesquihalide, adding 0À5 to 5 mols of vanadium oxychloride per mol, of titanium chloride and sufficient alkyl aluminium sesquichloride to provide 5 to 20 mols. per mol. of vanadium oxychloride, and copolymerizing the residual monomer with ethylene at -20‹ to +20‹ C. The butene-1 and/or propene may be pure or C 4 - or C 3 -cuts, and suitable other olefins are ethylene and hexene-1. The titanium chloride may be the tetrachloride, trichloride or aluminium activated trichloride. The alkyl groups in the aluminium compound may be ethyl, propyl, butyl or isobutyl, and conversion to sesquihalide may be effected by adding halogen, hydrogen halide or aluminium halide. The activity of the second stage catalyst may be improved by adding butyl perchlorocrotonate. Fillers, e.g. silica, silicates, sulphates, carbon black, graphite, talc, kaolin and carbonates, may be added during or after polymerization, which may be effected batchwise or continuously. The catalyst residues may be decomposed and residual monomers removed by treating the products with steam. The compositions may be used as jointing strips or adhesive tapes in building, pipe laying, car construction and joining plastic articles. Examples describe the preparation of compositions by polymerizing (1) butene-1 followed by ethylene, (2) C 4 -cut containing butene-1, butene-2 and butane followed by C 4 -cut and ethylene, and (3) C 4 -cut and propene/propane mixtures followed by ethylene, optionally with the addition of talc, chalk or kaolin to the second stage.
