Abstract

1444161 Luminescent screens DF WINNEK 4 Oct 1973 [17 Jan 1973] 46448/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division H5] An intensifying screen comprises a sheet of material transparent to radiation of a first wavelength range and opaque to radiation of a second wavelength range, the sheet including a plurality of holes extending from one face but not as far as the other face, each hole being of circular or polygonal cross-section and being filled with phosphor 28 producing radiation in the second wavelength upon excitation by radiation in the first range. The screen achieves maximum resolution by reducing diffusion. Sheet 12 is generally rigid, such as of ceramic with holes milled by a described photoforming process producing holes with 2 degree taper characteristic of the technique, the phosphor being sprayed on the sheet. A Be-Cu mixture or plastics sheet 12 is also exemplified. Excitation may be X-rays producing visible light or other radiation from the fluorescent material. The phosphor may be ZnS; Cu, Cl, fast or slow response, speed also varying with crystal sizes. Sheet 12 may be of any configuration, e.g. rectangular. The holes may be 9 Î 10<SP>4</SP> or more /ins.<SP>2</SP>, each hole being circular, hexagonal or square cross-section for example. Fig. 1 (not shown) is a film cassette of an X-ray apparatus which may be for diagnostic purposes and includes Bakelite (Registered Trade Mark) plate (18) and photographic film (22). Screen dimensions are given.
