Abstract

1444061 Insulating coatings WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 5 June 1974 [4 April 1974] 24873/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Electrical resistors are provided with a flameproof insulating protective coating by applying a suspension comprising (i) a mixture consisting of 2-20% wt of a polymerisable organosilane having at least one hydrolysable radical and 98-80% wt of a powdered inorganic siliceous material capable of coupling or otherwise reacting with the silane with the proviso that up to 30% wt of the siliceous material may be replaced by one or more substances selected from suspension agents, pigments and other compatible additives e.g. resins and fillers, and (ii) a liquid diluent, evaporating off the diluent and then curing the coating by heating e.g. to 100‹-200‹C. The preferred silane has the formula (Silane A). Suitable siliceous materials are crystalline silica, a silicate, quartz, steatite, porcelain, silicate glass, mica and/or asbestos. Suitable liquids are water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, methyl "Oxitol" (RTM) and/or isopropyl alcohol. Mixture (i) may comprise up to 20% wt of an organopolysiloxane resin. In example 1 a cylindrical resistor comprising a ceramic substrate fitted with metal terminal leads and having a nickel-chromium wire resistance element wound thereon is provided with a coating prepared from a suspension comprising silane A, powdered electrical porcelain, finely ground quartz, Cr 2 O 3 pigment and water. In example 2 a cylindrical resistor comprising a ceramic substrate having a tin oxide resistive film and metallic terminals is provided with a coating prepared from a suspension comprising silane A, quartz powder, asbestine suspending agent, red iron oxide pigment, a methylphenylpolysiloxane resin and isopropyl alcohol.
