Abstract

1444037 Laying pipe-lines BROWN & ROOT Inc 30 Sept 1974 42464/74 Heading F2P A method for starting to lay an elongate strut. ture, e.g. a pipe-line 26 upon the bed of a body of water comprises anchoring one end of a flexible cable 18 adjacent a submerged installation 8 for connection with the pipe-line, connecting the other end of cable 18 to a vessel 2, tensioning the cable between the anchor and the vessel 2, progressively suspending and lowering portions of the pipe-line 26 from the cable 18 at a station on the vessel, slidably supporting the pipe-line from the cable and maintaining a profile control over the pipe-line between the vessel and the bed of the body of water by means of said cable 18. Tensioning of the cable 18 may be initially achieved either by laying away the vessel against a constant cable length or anchoring the vessel and using a tensioning winch on the vessel. To support the pipe-line 26 from the cable 18 for free translatable movement thereupon suitable hanger, Fig. 2, may be provided, the straps 36 of which are sufficiently flexible to allow for variation of the distance between the cable and the pipe-line (Figs. 3 and 6, not shown).
