Abstract

1443821 Bookbinding KA DUK LAM [trading as SEALAND INDUSTRIAL CO] 30 Jan 1974 [13 Feb 1973] 7094/73 Heading B6A [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for binding a pile of sheets together using deformable, substantially U-shaped fasteners 1, comprises means for biasing the fasteners, held in a magazine, towards a fastening station 11 where a fastening member 24 is operable to deform an arm of a fastener 1 into engagement with the edge of a pile. The magazine is defined by two relatively movable magazine members each with a recess for accommodating respective arms of the fasteners. One such member comprises an elongate member 6 and a step 9 in the base 3 of the apparatus. The other such member 18 has a recess 23 and is pivotably mounted on fixed side flanges 19. The member 6 includes a channel 7 in which an extension 13 of a biasing member 10 is accommodated. The biasing member is acted upon by a spring 15 to urge the fasteners 1 to one end of the magazine. The fastening member 24 is mounted on an operating member 25 pivotable with and relative to the member 18. In operation, the operating member 25 is swung back, taking with it the member 18, so that fasteners can be loaded into the magazine. These members are then replaced and on depression of the operating member 25, member 18 abuts the member 6 and the operating member then moves relative to the member 18 causing the fastening member 24 to deform the endmost fastener 1 in the magazine onto a pile of sheets inverted into the fastening station 11.
