Abstract

144,315. Lyth, J. J., and Lowe, J. Aug. 24, 1917, [Convention date]. Spindle-driving apparatus; stop-apparatus, non- automatic; spindle apparatus.-The spindles of spinning-frames are driven by helical or other toothed gearing from a shaft comprising sections coupled tdgether and driven by motors, the shaft and gearing revolving on ball bearings in an oil bath comprising a series of covered troughs coupled together. Spiral gears 24 provided with tapered bores 25, Fig. 4, which receive the ends of the spindles are driven from a shaft 13 mounted on ball bearings in a trough 11, Fig. 2. The shaft 13 is driven by motors disposed at each end thereof or by a single motor disposed at an intermediate point, so that, if it is necessary to stop and uncouple one of the sections of the shaft, the entire shaft, with the exception of the section removed, may remain in operation in the former arrangement, and at least one half of the shaft in the latter arrangement. The gears 27 are secured to the shaft 13 by a split tapered bush and a nut, and the sections of the shaft are coupled together by a similar bush 28a, Fig. 6, the bore of which is polygonal to engage similarly shaped parts on the ends of the sections, the part on one section being longer than the bush so that, when disconnecting, the bush can be slid thereon to free the adjacent section. The gears 24 are carried in ball bearings in rails 17, 18, which are made in sections of approximately the same length as that of the trough sections, and the joints of the upper rail are staggered relatively to the joints of the trough sections. Each section of the trough is provided with a cover 22 and with internal flanges 23, which prevent the Bow of oil to one end of the trough if the machine is not properly levelled. The spindles may be individually disconnected from the gears 24 and braked against a rail 34 by means of levers 41 which engage collars 39 thereon. The taper of the ends of the spindles is such that the spindles are gripped sufficiently tightly in the gears 24 by reason of their weight. During normal running, the levers are maintained out of contact with the collars 39 by springs 43. The troughs are charged with oil so that the lower parts of the gears 27 rotate therein, and the shaft rotates in such direction that the gears travel upwardly adjacent the pinions and splash the oil thereagainst. To check the upward movement of the oil around the spindles the lower ends of the pinions may be plugged. The upper bearings are spaced from the cover so that any oil which works up the spindle is thrown off beneath the cover, and the cover is set into tha trough to prevent creeping of the oil through the joint.
