Abstract

1443001 Machinery safety devices DUNLOP Ltd 27 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 15004/73 Heading F2J A blade guard 20 having a transparent plastics extension shield 23 at its leading edge, for a table-mounted band-knife or band-saw, is operated by the blade starting mechanism (not shown) on starting the knife or saw blade 10 to either set and maintain the guard 20, 23 at a predetermined distance above the work during cutting or to lower the guard to the table if the blade 10 is started without the insertion of work, thereby giving total protection from the moving blade, and thereafter to return, i.e. raise the guard 20, 23 to its "rest", i.e. inoperative position when the blade is stopped. In operation the material 40 to be cut is placed in position relative the blade 10. The blade 10 is started and a pneumatic back-pressure sensing probe 33, carried by the guard, and actuated by its pneumatic control cylinder 34, energized by the blade starting mechanism, moves to a position below the guard 20. Air passes through the probe and the guard 20 moves down, via a pneumatic driving cylinder 31, towards the material 40, or the work-table 50 if no material is present, until on contact with the material, or work-table, a back-pressure is sent to a diaphragm valve (not shown) which actuates a pneumatically operated guard locking device 35, retracts the probe 33 and exhausts both sides of the guard driving cylinder 31 such that the guard is stationary at a set distance above the material with the blade running and will remain in this position until the blade is stopped, i.e. switched off, when the guard will remain stationary for a preset time, to allow the blade to stop and then return to the "rest" position.
