Abstract

1442246 Phosphorus-containing modified polymers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 27 Aug 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 37398/74 Heading C3P Three-dimensional gel-like polymers derived from (a) a monomer selected from lower (C 1-6 ) epoxyalkyl (meth)acrylates and mono-(meth)- acrylates of a lower (C 1-6 ) alkylene glycol or polyalkylene glycol, (b) a cross-linking monomer, and optionally (c) a further monomer, are modified by reaction at the hydroxy or epoxy group of the (a) units with phosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, a phosphorus pentahalide or a phosphorus oxyhalide, followed if desired by hydrolysis to form phosphoric acid residues in the cases where they are not already present. In examples, the polymers modified are derived from the following monomers: (a) 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, diethylene glycol monomethacrylate, triethylene glycol monomethacrylate or glycidyl methacrylate; (b) ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate or divinyl benzene; and (when present) (c) methyl methacrylate, acrylamide or styrene. The exemplified reactants are H 3 PO 4 , P 2 O 5 , PCl 5 and POCl 3 . In the latter case the resulting -POCl 2 groups are hydrolysed with NaHCO 3 . The above products may be further modified. In Example 9, the hydrolysed product of reaction with POCl 3 is complexed with BF 3 to form a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. In Example 10, the un-hydrolysed product containing -POCl 2 groups is reacted with dodecyl alcohol.
