Abstract

1442235 HF production; sulphur removal E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 25 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 41749/74 Heading C1A Deposits of elemental sulphur formed within apparatus used for the manufacture of HF are removed by a process comprising treating the apparatus with SO 3 in an amount greater than 2 molar parts per molar part of elemental sulphur. The SO 3 may be used in the vapour phase, or in solution, for example, in H 2 SO 4 (oleum) or fluosulphonic acid. The supposed reaction occurring is 2SO 3 + S#3SO 2 .
