Abstract
1441849 Incinerator LOCANER 12 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1963] 06394/74 Heading F4B A vehicle mounted incinerator comprises a double walled rotary furnace of frusto-conical form surrounded by a casing rotating with the furnace and forming an ash receptacle, a charging device for refuse arranged to prevent the inlet of air, and an exhaust gas outlet leading to an after burner and gas cleaning equipment. Refuse deposited in a hopper 5, Fig. 1, at the rear of the vehicle is fed by a screw 6 into a shoot 3 and a hood surrounding one end of the rotary furnace 1, where it is ignited by burners 19, 20 and burnt with air delivered through the perforated inner wall 16 of the furnace. Ash falling from the end of the drum is moved to the closed end of the ash receptacle 15 by a helical vane 17. Flue gases leaving the hood 2 are burnt by a flame from a burner 62 at the entry to flue conduits 4. A grating 63 - ensures that lightweight refuse burns before being drawn into the flue. The flue 4 leads the gases through a spray 64 to a cyclone 13, having a water reservoir 12 at the bottom and a fan 9 drawing the gases to the outlet 11. A ring main sprays the wall of the cyclone 13, and the gases may be drawn through the water by the action of the fan 9 to pass over the surface according to the level of the overflow. The charging end of the furnace is formed with annular plates co-operating with a stationary member to form a plenum chamber for combustion air supplied in pulsed fashion. The inner and outer walls of the furnace are attached to frame members extending from the mouth of the furnace to the closed end of the ash receptacle so as to allow for thermal expansion, and the inner wall is formed of alternate flat plates and flanged channel members with perforations so as to supply air radially, and in two directions having tangential components (Fig. 3). The charging apparatus, hood 2, flue 4 and gas cleaning equipment can be detached from the remainder of the unit and supported on jacks 74 for maintenance. Ash is removed from the receptacle 15 by reversing the direction of rotation of the furnace, doors 18 being arranged near the discharge end of the furnace, and a door in the hood 2 serves as an inspection door and to admit air to cool the flue gases. The operation of at least one of the burners in the furnace, the burner in the flue and the opening of the inspection door in the charging and flue outlet hood 2 are controlled in accordance with the temperature in the furnace or in the flue.
