Abstract

1441845 Hydraulic brake actuators GIRLING Ltd 13 Dec 1974 [22 Dec 1973] 59684/73 Heading F2F An hydraulic brake actuator comprises a piston 3 working in a cylinder 1 and having telescopic parts 4, 6, resilient means such as a spring 18 opposing extending movement of part 4, and a normally open valve member 12 controlling fluid flow between the parts 4, 6, the member 12 closing on movement of part 4 and the area of part 6 exposed to fluid being smaller than the full area of part 4 which is exposed to fluid when the valve member 12 is in closed position, the arrangement causing the actuator to use less fluid in taking up clearances than a conventional actuator. After the fluid pressure has overcome spring 18 part 4 advances to disengage an extension 14 of member 12 from end wall 2 of part 4 and allow the valve to close so that the fluid acts on part 4 and the two parts advance together.
