Abstract
1441826 Metal pouring apparatus BRITISH STEEL CORP 31 Oct 1974 [7 Nov 1973] 21571/73 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions G3 and H4] The rate at which metal is teemed from a vessel is controlled by a slide gate valve 7 in response to any difference between the measured value for the discharge rate and a desired value (set at 15). As shown, the rate is measured by obtaining the rate of change in weight of the vessel (for of ingot moulds 5 or a tundish), detected by a load cell 8 and corrected for variations due to swinging movements by the output of an accelerometer 10. The actual weight and the rate are displayed at 13. The error, obtained at 14 is converted from an electrical to an hydraulic signal at 17 to operate the valve 7. Alternatively, a current may be induced in the metal flow below the valve and detected slightly downstream, or microwave signals may be reflected from the surface of metal in the mould to determine either its height (by echo time) or its rate of rise by Doppler effect. The rate may be varied, e.g. as the mould metal reaches a predetermined level, either manually by control 21 or by programming the reference value.
