Abstract
144,140. O'Donnell, J. P., (Arnold, E. F., and Arnold, F. F., (trading as Arnold Machine Co.)). Aug. 12, 1919. Shearing; metal-sheet feeds.- Strip metal 3 is cut into lengths by transverse cutters 22, 23 on a slide 20 operated by a cam 26 so that it moves at the same speed as the strip 3 during the cutting, the blade 23 being reciprocated by a cam 30 and raised by springs when released by the cam. The cam 30 is preferably in the form of a ratchet-wheel, and is normally held in inoperative position, as shown, by a spring-actuated double-ended pawl, but is set to operate the blade 23 at given intervals by pins 35 on a chain 36 engaging teeth 33 on a star-wheel mounted on a shaft 32 carrying another star-wheel, the teeth 34 of which operate the cam-wheel 30 to shift it forward half a tooth. The knife 23 on its return movement engages the cam 30 and resets it in inoperative position. The strip 3 is fed to the cutters by rolls 5, and from them by rolls 6, 7. When the strip 3 is used up, a feeler 49, dropping into a recess 50, releases a lever 52 on a shaft 62 actuated by a spring 54 to slide the shaft 32 so that the teeth 33 are not engaged by the pins 35. To reset this stop-mechanism, a handlever 43 is moved into the position shown, thus setting the shaft 62 by the lever 66 acting on the lug 44, lifting the feeler 49 by a cam-shaped extension 67, 68, and also raising the upper feedroll 5 by a cam 74 and lever 59, so that a fresh strip may be inserted. The hand-lever 43 is then shifted to its working position to allow these parts to operate normally, a spring connexion allowing the shaft 32 to move into working position later than the other parts should one of the teeth 33 foul one of the pins 35 during resetting.
