Abstract
1440963 Separating gases; semipermeable membrane apparatus C W SKARSTROM and J KERTZMAN 29 May 1973 25583/73 Headings B1L and B1X A process for selectively separating a component from a multiple component fluid feed mixture, comprises passing the feed along and in contact with a wall of a permeable polymeric membranous hollow member, the hollow member bieng longer in length than in crosssection and the permeable polymeric membranous material being selectively permeable to one of the components contained in the feed; countercurrently passing a second fluid stream relatively free of said one component and having a different composition that the feed and separated therefrom by the wall of the polymeric permeable membranous hollow member; controlling the flow rates of both the feed stream and the second fluid stream so as to enable said one permeable component of the feed to permeate through the wall of the polymeric hollow member and into the second fluid stream; and recovering fluid retentate containing substantially less of said one component than present in the feed stream, the polymeric material being a perfluorocarbon polymer having either sulphonic acid or sulphonate groups. Reference is made to the separation of CO 2 , N 2 , O 2 , CCl 1 , acetylene or water from air and He, H 2 , N 2 , A, CO or nitrogen oxides from gas mixtures.
