Abstract

1440728 Stabilized cadmium pigments BAYER AG 12 Aug 1974 [18 Aug 1973] 35400/74 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C4 and C3] A stabilized cadmium pigment comprising cadmium sulphide, the lattice of the cadmium sulphide optionally containing zinc and/or selenium, which pigment is coated with one or more precipitates insoluble in an aqueous medium of silica, a colourless phosphate having divalent and/or higher-valent metal cations, a colourless silicate having divalent and/or highervalent metal cations, or any mixture thereof may be produced by forming a suspension of the pigment in water having dissolved therein a phosphate or silicate, adding to the solution at least one salt of a divalent or higher-valent metal or an acid to precipitate as a coating on the pigment the colourless phosphate, the colourless silicate or silica, separating the water from the pigment and drying the thus stabilized pigment. In the examples aqueous suspension of cadmium yellow pigment (CdS and (Cd 0À64 Zn 0À36 )S) and cadmium orange pigment ((Cd, Se)S) are treated with waterglass solution, a solution containing CaCl 2 and AlCl 3 , HCl, solutions of Na 2 HPO 4 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , NaOH, MgSO 4 and ZnSO 4 . The treated pigments are filtered off, washed, dried and ground.
