Abstract

1440707 Safety devices in vehicles FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 30 May 1974 23906/74 Heading B7B [Also in Division F2] A vehicle passenger restraint device 10 comprises a deformable metal beam 11 of C-shaped section about which is moulded a rigid phenolic foam 14; a layer of flexible foam 15 overlies the outer surface of the phenolic foam 14 and an outer cover 16 of PVC sheet totally encloses the drum 15 to prevent the friable phenolic foam 14 from being displaced from the restraint under impact conditions. The device 10 and the beam 11 are of U- shape, and the ends (13) of the beam 11 are rigidly secured to the body structure of a motor vehicle in front of a passenger seat at chest level or knee level. The beam 11 is formed of apertured sheet steels. The phenolic foam 14 has a density of between 22 and 27 kg./m.<SP>3</SP>, preferably about 24 kg./m.<SP>3</SP>. In operation, the resilient foam 15 spreads the load of the impact over the outer surface of foam 14 which begins to collapse at a certain load, the beam 11 also deforming.
