Abstract
1375815 Crash restraint bags; protective guards; dashboards GENERAL MOTORS CORP 17 May 1973 [19 May 1972 (2)] 23541/73 Heading B7B A crash restraint bag 96 is fitted in rolled-up condition within a manifold 46 extending within a dashboard 18 having an upper panel 20 and a front panel 22 housing instruments 24. The bag 96 is inflated from a diffuser 78 supplied with fluid under pressure by a generator 94 upon receipt of a signal dependent upon deceleration or deformation of the vehicle. A cover 114 formed of a foam pad 116 covers the rolled up bag, but on inflation the cover swings forwardly about a flange 120 to permit unrolling of the bag along the upper panel 20 into the Fig. 4 (not shown) position. A valve 68 of spring steel, riveted at one end to a wall 50 of the manifold, releases pressure within the bag whenever this exceeds a predetermined limit due to occupant impact. In a vehicle fitted with individual front bucket seats instead of a single bench seat, the bag 96 may be in two parts one for the driver and one for the front passenger. A knee protecting panel 126 includes a metal base covered with foam material 130 having an outer decorative covering 132. A bracket 133 of D-shape is secured between tie bars 30, 38, while an inverted U-bracket 141 of channel crosssection is welded to a bracket 142 having a leg 143 welded to the front bulk head 14 also welded to a U-shaped bracket 28. A bracket 34 extends between the bracket 28 and a bracket 36.
