Abstract

1440562 Portable containers; moulded boxes M O ROWLANDS 30 July 1973 [5 May 1972] 21187/72 Headings B8D and B8P [Also in Division B5] An exposed edge of a peripherally extending side wall 12 of a hollow article, e.g. a decorative box, tube or a suitcase, moulded from a thermoplastic material, the edge having no join in its length, is treated by heating a marginal portion of the article along the edge to soften the marginal portion and then folding the marginal portion inwards against the inner face of the side wall. As shown, the marginal edge portion of a side wall of a box moulded from ABS sheet having an external embossed P.V.C. sheet laminated thereto is heated by a heater 14 whilst the lower parts of the side wall are shielded, if necessary. After heating, a stiffener 15, in the form of a rectangular frame having an edge portion of a moulded liner 16 wrapped therearound, is secured to the side wall with the top edge of the stiffener substantially level with the top of the cool part of the side wall. Whilst still soft, the marginal portion is folded inwardly around the whole periphery of the box and is held until it cools. The outer surface of the side wall may have a design or pattern thereon which continues uninterrupted over the edge. The thermoplastic material of the article may have, on one or both of its surfaces, a pliable sheet material, e.g. hessian.
