Abstract

1440360 Chrysanthemic esters BASF AG 12 Nov 1973 [13 Nov 1972] 52365/73 Heading C2C Chrysanthemic esters of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are identical or different and are hydrogen or alkyl (1-3C) or isomeric mixtures thereof, are prepared by heating a phenyl allyl ether where Y is -CH 2 OH or a group such as formyl, carbalkoxy, halomethyl or acyloxymethyl or chrysanthemoyloxymethyl readily converted thereto to give a Claisen condensation and ring closure to the 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivative or derivatives of formula followed if necessary by reaction with the chrysanthemic acid derivative. The ether may be prepared by reacting a substituted phenol with an allyl halide. Examples describe the preparation of 7-hydroxymethyl-2,3-dimethyl- 2,3 - dihydrobenzofuran from 2 - butenyloxybenaldehyde through 7-formyl-2,3-dimethyl- 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran; 4- and 6-hydroxymethyl - 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - dihydrobenzofuran from 3-butenyloxybenzyl alcohol through the acetate and 4- and 6-acetoxymethyl-2,3- dimethyl - 2,3 - dihydrobenzofuran; 4 - acetoxymethyl - 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - dihydrobenzofuran; 6 - bromomethyl - 2,3 - dimethyl- 2,3 - dihydrobenzofuran; 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3- dihydrobenzofuryl-7-, -4-, and -6-methyl esters of cis/trans chrysanthemic acid. The compounds are used as pesticides as solutions, emulsions, suspensions or dusts with conventional additives, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene or alkylated naphthalene, kieselguhr, talc, clay or fertilizer, N-methyl-α-pyrrolidone, and wetting agents.
