Abstract

144,026. Goss Printing Press Co., (Goss Printing Press Co.). April 9, 1919. Feeding webs.-A web-roll changing mechanism for printing or other machines comprises means for supporting two web rolls in position for alternative feeding without shifting either roll, and a roll-rotating device which is movable into engagement with the surface of either roll, when fresh, to bring it to a surface speed substantially equal to that of the expiring web from the other roll. As shown, the frame is provided with two roll supports 19, 20. The web 23 from the lower roll is fed to the press by belts 24, 25 26, and, when the press is being fed from the upper roll, the web is fed by the belts 25, 26 only. The belt rollers 34, 37 are grooved for the passage of the bolts. When the web in. use is nearly exhausted, the fresh roll, prepared by lightly attaching the end of the web to the body of the roll and applying patches of adhesive to the end of the web, is rotated at the speed of the expiring web by belts 42 passing round rollers 44 fixed to a shaft 45 and round rollers 46 carried bv arms 48 secured to sleeves loose on the shaft 45. One of the sleeves is connected by an arm 50, link 51, and arm 52 to a hand-lever 54 by which the belts are thrown into contact with a fresh roll in either position. The shaft 45 is driven from the press through a shaft 61 and reversing-gear comprising a bevel-gear 58 fixed to the shaft 45 and meshing with two bevel-gears 59, 60 loose on the shaft 61 and adapted to be connected thereto alternatively by a clutch 62. A web-stripper 68 coacting with the upper roll is secured to a shaft 69 and is normally held out cf contact with the roll by a latch 71 engaging a notched collar on the shaft 69; but, on release of the latch 71, the stripper is raised by a spring into contact with the roll, and the end of the web is thereby stripped from the roll and is guided by the stripper and a stationary guide 71 into the bite of the belts 25, 26, which effect the junction of the webs. The old web is then severed. To prevent continuous contact of the stripper 68 with the web roll 17 during the feed from that roll, the shaft 69 is connected by linkage 78, 79, 80 to a lever 82 carrying a roller 83 engaging the roll. A stripper 64 mounted and controlled similarly to the stripper 68 is provided and serves for stripping the web from a fresh roll in the lower position and guiding it to the bite of the belts 24, 25. In a modification, the belts 24 are dispensed with, the web from the lower roll passing directly to the bite of the belts 25, 26. In this construction also, the belt pulleys 44 are on a shaft separate from, but geared to, the shaft 45, the swinging of the belts being effected by a hand-lever secured directly to one of the sleeves carrying the arms 48.
