1440176 Preparation of carboxylic acid esters MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5365/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] The invention comprises a process for preparing an ester having a moiety derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid and a moiety derived from a carbocyclic aromatic compound having a hydroxymethyl group attached to the aromatic nucleus which comprises reacting said aliphatic carboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid) with a compound having a methyl group attached to an aromatic ring (e.g. toluene or xylene) and molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) palladium metal (ii) an antimony component and (iii) one or more carboxylic acid salts of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, zinc, cadmium or lead, supported on a carrier.
