Abstract

1440126 Photographic silver ion and dye diffusion transfer process GAF CORP 18 July 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 34177/73 Heading G2C A photo-sensitive element, capable of yielding positive multi-colour dye transfer images when exposed and treated with an alkaline processing solution containing a colour developer of the Formula:- Y-C o D where Y is H, SO 3 H or COOH and C o D is a p-phenylenediamine derivative radical and silver halide solvent in a concentration of less than 10g/litre, comprises (A) a support; (B) three dye providing assemblies on the support which provide diffusible cyan, magenta and yellow dyes, respectively; (C) barrier colloid layers between cyan, magenta and yellow dye-providing assemblies separating the colour assemblies from one another; each dye-providing assembly comprising, in order, (i) a colour-providing nucleating layer containing dispersed noble metal or noble metal sulphide particles, a non-diffusible colourless 2-equivalent coupler of the Formula:- X-C<SP>1</SP>-L-B where X is H,-SO 3 H or -COOH, C<SP>1</SP> is a 5- pyrazolone, phenolic or an open-chain ketomethylene coupler radical and is substituted in the coupling position with L; L is sulphoxy, carboxy, oxy, azo, azoxy, this or alkylidene; and B is a photographically inert organic ballasting radical of such molecular size and configuration to cause the coupler to be non-diffusible; (ii) a separation colloid layer containing an anti-oxidant reactive with oxidized colour developer; and (iii) a lightrecording silver halide layer sensitive to red, green or blue and containing a non-diffusing colour former which serves to react as a scavenger for oxidized colour developer in the negative development of areas exposed to actinic light, each nucleating layer being less than 3 microns away from its associated emulsion layer and 3-6 microns away from any other emulsion layer. The element may comprise a dye image receiving sheet which may be transparent or opaque see Figs. 7 and 9 (not shown). The exposed light-sensitive layers may be protected from further exposure on removal from a camera by opacifying layers.
