Abstract

1440068 Elastomeric polymer compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972 24 April 1973] 49842/72 and 19276/73 Headings C3P and C3R An elastomeric material is prepared by reacting polyurethane precursors by a process wherein at least one polymeric material (a) containing at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and of mean weight 400 to 10,000 is reacted with at least one polyisocyanate (b) in the first stage and the polyurethane prepolymer so formed is reacted in the second stage with at least one chain extender (c) containing two isocyanatereactive groups and mean weight less than 750, the reaction mixture containing at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated material in a proportion by weight of precursors: unsaturated material in the range 10 : 90 to 98 : 2, and polymerizing the ethylenically unsaturated material when reaction of the polyurethane precursors is substantially completed. In examples (a) may be poly(ethylene adipate), poly(tetrahydrofuran), poly(propylene glycol), poly(ethylene tetramethylene adipate) or poly(ethylene maleate adipate), (b) may be 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or a mixture of toluene-2,4- and -2,6-diisocyanates and (c) is butane-1,4-diol. The ethylenically unsaturated material may be glycol dimethacrylate, butyl or methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile or exemplified mixtures thereof. There may also be used a mixture of styrene, divinyl benzene and ethyl styrene. Polymerization catalysts such as tertiary butyl peroxide or peroctoate and azobisisobutyronitrile may be incorporated in the reaction mixture.
