Abstract

1439932 Testing fuel injection pumps LESLIE HARTRIDGE Ltd 10 July 1973 [10 April 1972 23 March 1973] 16420/72 Headings F1A and F1B Fuel injection pump testing apparatus comprises a fuel supply line (52), Fig. 3 (not shown) connected to force-applying means 41, Fig. 2 for closing the valves of a number of fuel injectors, pressure-varying means (53) for varying the fluid supply pressure and means 45 to prevent or reduce interaction between fuel injectors so that the operation of one fuel injector does not affect the operation of the other fuel injectors. Varying the fluid supply pressure enables the nozzle opening pressure to be matched to the injection pump under test. Space 43, Fig. 2 is fed via restrictor 45 and the fluid-pressure variations acting on piston 41 vary the compression of spring 22 thereby varying the nozzle opening pressure. In modifications the restriction 45 is replaced by a plate valve 131, Fig. 6, or a ball non-return valve (138), Fig. 7 (not shown). In an application to testing a fuel injection installation in a two cylinder engine the supply lines to the fuel injectors have valved junctions 67, 68, Fig. 4 whereby the delivery from the fuel pump 60 to test injectors can be measured whilst either or both of the engine injectors 61, 62 are rendered inoperative. In apparatus for testing a pump feeding four injectors the injection shots are collected in chambers (142), Fig. 10 (not shown) and a screw ram (139) carrying a pressure gauge (140) is connected to control the nozzle opening pressures. Pressure gauge (140) has scales calibrated to indicate the nozzle opening pressure and the actual pressure in the chamber 135, Fig. 6.
