Abstract

1439389 Parachutes M STEINTHAL & CO Inc 14 Sept 1973 43308/73 Heading B7G A parachute constructed to rotate in flight comprises a plurality of circumferentially arranged panels 11 of trapezium shape when flat and joined leading edge of one to trailing edge of a succeeding one so that when inflated they act individually as aerofoils with airflow openings 12 between adjacent panels. Inner suspension lines 16 are connected to radially inward corners of the panels and to substantially the mid-point of an associated outer suspension line 15 which lines are secured to radially outward corners of the panels and connected at their lower ends by a load-supporting swivel 14. Weights are stored in pockets secured to some panels and secured to the periphery of the parachute by cords so that they may be thrown out by centrifugal force to catch in trees during the last stage of a drop. When the parachute is used for dropping flares it may have centrallypositioned hollow crown secured by cords to the inner edges of the panels to entrap warm emissions from the flare to provide an additional retarding effect.
