Abstract

1331655 Saucer-shaped flying machine A P PEDRICK 1 April 1971 8428/71 Headings B7G and B7W An inverted saucer-shaped aircraft propelled in normal flight by air-screws 14, 16 or jet 17 driven by turbines 7 has air rotors (6) or a centrifugal pump impeller rotatable about a central vertical axis in order to allow the aircraft to hover. Air directed downwards is confined by a concertina-like flexible curtain 20 which may be contracted into spaces 25 about the lift rotor. Base area of the aircraft may be increased by extending skirt plates 1<SP>1</SP>, swing wings 15 may be extended by ailerons 15<SP>1</SP> for better lateral control and a parachute 30 within a cowling 31 may be deployed to stabilize descent. The aircraft also has tail plates 27 and fins and rudders 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. Duct plates (11), (12) in Figs. 7A-7D (not shown) are used to direct the air flow from turbines 7 to drive the air-screws 14, 16 and/or the hovering rotor, or jet 17.
