Abstract

1439315 Multi-spindle lathes GILDEMEISTER AG 5 March 1975 [6 March 1974] 9153/75 Heading B3T [Also in Division F2] In a machine tool such as a multi-spindle lathe in which a plurality of work spindles 2 are rotatably mounted in a spindle drum 4, which is concentrically indexable with respect to the drum housing 4, means is provided to supply lubricant to the respective spindles across the peripheral junction between the drum and the housing at each indexed position of the drum. At each indexed position there is provided a fluid pressure coupling unit which includes a radially displaceable piston member 12 which has extension portions 121, 122 connected by a common bore 123, the portion 122 being connected to a flexible lubricant supply pipe and the portion 121 being connectible in each indexed position with a bore 41 in the drum which is connected to the respective work spindle. Lubricant is supplied to each coupling unit by a pump 10 via multi-way valve 23 and pressure medium, e.g. lubricant, is also supplied to the coupling unit via a cam controlled multi-way valve 15 which causes the radial displacement of the coupling piston member 12 causing the portion 121 to seatingly engage the bore 41. To prevent loss of lubricant when the portion 121 is retracted by spring 13, a seating 18 is provided in the bores 41 of the turret and a co-operating seating 17 on the portion 121 of the coupling member. Each seating is provided with a spring biased plunger assembly 20, 21, the plungers abutting each other to permit the passage of lubricant when the seatings 17 and 18 are in engagement and the plungers being in engagement with their respective seatings when the piston member 12 is radially retracted. The operation sequence is effected automatically in relation to the indexing of the spindle drum.
