Abstract

1439051 Flexible and evacuable containers AIRFLEX CONTAINERS Ltd 21 May 1974 [24 May 1973 28 March 1974] 24802/73 and 13786/74 Headings B8C and B8D A flexible container comprises a flexible, impermeable, base member 1, and upstanding part 3 having a continuous channel 4 encircling an area 2 of the base member, the upstanding part 3 being sealed to, or integral with, the base member, a load-bearing rigid member 8 fitting within said upstanding part 3, a flexible impermeable cover 6, sealing means, adapted to provide a fluid-tight seal between the cover and the continuous channel sealing the perimeter of the cover to the base member, and valve means 7 controlling an outlet for air from the interior of the container whereby suction can be applied to, and maintained within, the said interior. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the base member 1 and the cover 3 are made of butyl rubber, a flexible tube 5 around the periphery of the cover 3 being accommodated in the channel 4 and inflated to form a seal. The edge of the cover may carry a flap which is releasably engageable with the base member by means of hooks and eyes. The cover 3 may be provided either with pockets to accommodate protruding parts of container contents such as armoured vehicles or, with apertures sealed to said protruding parts projecting therethrough. The cover 3 may also include openings with airtight sliding-clasp-fasteners, and have eyelets (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), for securing elastic ropes (13) to retain the cover in close fitting engagement with the contents should the cover become punctured. The assembly includes a further load-bearing member 9, which may be omitted, or replaced by a pair of rigid members placed under the area 2 beneath the tracks of the vehicle wheels. In a modification, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), a container assembly comprises a cover (22) with a thickened peripheral portion (44) having an inflatable tube (43), a rigid frame (20) formed in sections fitted together by sleeves (27) and fastened by means, either of spring clips (29) and lugs (28) or, by tack-welding (34) and having a slot (26) extending along the whole length of its upper surface, and a base sheet (21) with a thickened sealing edge (41). One, or more, separate inflatable tubes may replace the sealing tube (43) to seal the base sheet and cover together within the frame (20). The latter may have two separate channels each to receive the corresponding edge of the cover or, base sheet. The base sheet may be formed with a tube on its perimeter to seal into the channel of the frame 20.
