Abstract

1438989 Purification of formaldehyde ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 27 Nov 1973 54922/73 Heading C2C Formaldehyde containing impurities (especially water, methanol and formic acid) is purified by scrubbing gaseous formaldehyde at 100‹ to 160‹ C. with at least one polyoxyethylene ether polyol ester of the general formulµ where R is a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a methyl group, m is an integer from 2 to 5 and n is an integer from 1 to 13, and the n's in one molecule may be the same or different. The scrubbing liquid may be prepared by polymerizing ethylene oxide in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol RC(CH 2 OH) 3 , C(CH 2 OH) 4 or R<SP>1</SP>(CHOH) m CH 2 OH, and esterifying the terminal hydroxy groups of the product; preferred compounds are obtained from glycerin, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, trimethylol propane and trimethylol butane and preferred molecular weight (sum of oxyethylene units in a molecule) 200-2000. A counter-current method of operation is preferred, using a suitably packed column at 1-5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> pressure. The scrubbing liquid may be regnerated by stripping with an inert gas at atmospheric or reduced pressure.
